General Events Information
Cumbria branch is one of the most active (pardon the pun) branches in the UK. 2008 proved to be a hugely successful year for the various events run by the branch and so we are intending to build on the success of the last few years with our existing events programme and are reviewing the possibilty of one or two new events. In total, our activities include:
- An evening lecture programme which is free and open to the general public, the 2009/10 programme is now underway and details can be found here.
- An annual dinner, details of which can be found here.
- An annual seminar held in around June, details of the 2010 seminar can be found here.
- A summer lecture programme details of which can be found here.
New initiatives introduced since 2007 include:
- A series of technical lectures held at the Sellafield Visitors Centre called "The ABC of Sellafield" which offered a more detailed understanding of particular topics allowing people with no direct link to Sellafield the opportunity to find out more, whilst also creating an opportunity for those with some experience of site activities to broaden their understanding. Topics ranged from an overview of site, the fuel cycle, Calder Hall Power Station, safety regulation, environmental aspects through to decommissioning. Due to the popularity of this series a second series "The ABC of Radioactive Waste" was held in 2008 which gave an insight into the three grades of waste and their disposal (low, intermediate and high), an overview of the proposed geological disposal facility as well as providing independent view on UK Radwaste policy and the communities view on safe management of radioactive waste.
- A bursary competition where we awarded £2000 to a West Cumbrian A-Level student going on to University to study a science or engineering related subject. This event was successful as a pilot and a second event has also been run in 2008.
- A series of Christmas Lectures run specifically for school children in the West Cumbria region.
All events information will be placed on this website but if you would rather we dropped you an email to keep you informed, please contact events@nicumbria.org and we will add you to our mailing list.
